Top name designs fashionable condo

An award-winning design team was chosen to create Great Gulf Homes’ 32-storey Charlie condominium at the northwest corner of King St. W. and Charlotte St., the near entertainment, fashion and financial districts in downtown Toronto.

“We brought together a design team of multi-award-winning firms that are household names in the condominium world,” says Gary Switzer, executive vice-president of Great Gulf. Charlie’s exterior is by Diamond + Schmitt Architects. The interiors are by Cecconi Simone and the landscaping is by Janet Rosenberg + Associates.

Charlie will have a clear glass exterior anchored by a foundation of heritage brick that is reminiscent of historic neighbourhood emporiums. It sets the stage for fashionable living in an eclectic area.

Suites range in size from studios to two-bedroom with den layouts. Sizes are from 464 to 1,888 square feet. Balconies are 56 to 113 square feet. Prices begin from the low $200,000s to more than $1 million.

Suite features include nine-foot ceilings; prefinished engineered wood flooring in the foyer, living/dining area and kitchen; 40-ounce carpet; contemporary kitchen cabinetry designed by Cecconi Simone; choice of granite or solid-surface countertops; porcelain tile backsplash; stainless steel kitchen appliances; and porcelain tiles in the master bathroom.

Great Gulf to launch 32-storey tower

In the mid 1990’s, Great Gulf Homes became one of the first developers to build a condominium in the King Street West and Spadina Avenue area. At the time, the neighbourhood was considered “quite far west,” says Gary Switzer, Great Gulf executive vice-president.

Since then, the nieghbourhood – which is close to the fashion, financial and entertainment districts – has become a prime downtown location.

“We love the area, and have seen it transform over the past few years,” Mr. Switzer adds. “Its become much better as a residential area.”

Great Gulf has built other condo buildings in the area since that first one, and is now set to launch another – a 278-unit tower, called Charlie, which will rise 32-storeys at the northwest corner of King and Charlotte Street, just east of Spadina. It will open to the public next month.
